Miss NYC Plus Makes New Inroads in Fashion Industry
Bringing out the beauty in women outside of the established New York fashion world is Chanel Clark's goal in establishing the Miss NYC Plus organization. "Living in New York City, when it comes to fashion, you don't see plus sizes," she said, talking about what led her to provide a showplace for them. "I felt it was overdue."
She produced the first Miss NYC Plus Pageant in March this year, offering a chance for women size 12 to 26 to gather at an event all their own. With professional consulting from wardrobe stylist Jaquette E. Jones and runway coach Robert Mallory, himself a plus-size person, those who entered the pageant learned to express themselves in the way they dress and move.
Talking about the response to the pageant, Clark said, "It was surreal, overwhelming. I never expected such a response! We filled every seat and people were even standing up. It was phenomenal."
As awareness spreads about the unhealthy effect the super-thin runway models have on young girls, it is not just the plus-sized ladies who are responding enthusiastically to her project. "People from in and outside of the plus community have been pulling for us," Clark remarked. "It's inspiring me to do more in New York City for plus models on the catwalk."
US Supermodel Tyra Banks and the creator of her glamorous reality show ‘America’s Next Top Model’, has surprised ANTM’s first transgender contestant Isis King with a gift that many could only dream about-A free sex change operation.
The fashion model Banks announced on her talk show Tuesday that she would help King become a woman — a real woman. The talk show hostess announced that she has found a doctor to pay for King to undergo sex reassignment surgery.
Born Darrell Walls on October 1, 1985, King is the Prince George’s County resident. The 23 year old was born a mail, and was living in a homeless shelter when Banks discovered her and featured her in a photo shoot for the 10th cycle of her reality series.
King returned as a full-fledged contestant on “America’s Next Top Model” this season, but was kicked off almost midway through the current season after failing to produce a stunning photo during a shoot that required her to pose in swim suit.
“Darrell was somebody that I had to be. He had to be a certain thing. Darrell was never me. Isis is me. I’m free, I’m happy,” King said.
“This is not happening! “[I feel] like I’m about to wake up,” King said when Banks told her that they are going to transform her completely into a woman. On her show, Banks introduced King to Dr. Marci Bowers, a leading gender reassignment surgeon.
Dr. Bowers, who has experienced the surgery herself, is paying for the surgery.
King had been taking hormone replacement therapy but hadn’t received the surgery because of the high costs ($20,000 to $35,000).
“I look at it like, ‘Yes, I’m the first transgender contestant, but OK, lets move past it now. I try not to think about [being transgendered] because… I feel like I really was born in the wrong body, and it’s just the one thing that makes me feel uncomfortable,” King said Tuesday on Banks’ talk show.
Born in Los Angeles December 4, 1973, to Carolyn and Don Banks, Tyra Banks has parlayed her supermodel status into film, television, and music. She first emerged to prominence on the runways of Paris, Milan, London, Tokyo, and the U.S., but her work in the commercial world was her breakthrough.
Banks is best known as hostess/judge of the reality television show America’s Next Top Model, and is currently hosting her own Daytime Emmy Award-nominated talk show, The Tyra Banks Show.
America’s next top fashion models (ANTM) is a competitive reality TV show hosted and co produced by former Victoria’s Secret model Tyra Banks with the first cycle premiered in May 2003 on UPN (later CW). The “Top Model” finale airs Wednesday, Nov. 19.
The German former catwalk model follows in the stiletto heels of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen and the flame-haired Brit, Karen Elson, all of whom have been hand-picked by YSL’s creative director, Stefano Pilati, to front the brand’s major advertising campaigns.
The new campaign starring Claudia Schiffer was shot in the iconic Hollywood Hills by the photographic ‘dream team’ of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and will begin appearing in January when the February editions of the glossies hit the newstands.
The exclusive shot, pictured above, is the first to be released and is the image Pilati has selected as the cover of his fourth fashion ‘mission statement’, the Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto, which will be distributed worldwide on February 14th, 2009.
Schiffer’s fame dates from the late 80s when she was discovered in a Düsseldorf nightclub at the age of 15. She became an overnight sensation when fellow German, the couturier and designer, Karl Lagerfeld, dubbed her the ’new Bridgette Bardot’ and sent her down the Chanel catwalk in Paris as the new ‘face’ of the brand.
Although her walk was criticised as less than graceful, she was an immediate hit and her global appeal was assured when she appeared in a Guess? jeans advertising campaign. She became the first model to make the covers of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone magazine, the New York Times and People.
After a decade as a supermodel, she gradually took on fewer and fewer fashion modeling assignments. She married the British film producer-director Matthew Vaughan in 2002, who gave her a tortoise instead of a wedding ring.
The couple have two children and an Elizabethan mansion in Suffolk, as well as homes in London, New York, Germany and Monte Carlo. She made a spectacular return to the international fashion scene when she rejoined forces with Karl Lagerfeld as the ‘face’ of this year’s Chanel spring/summer campaign.
Now 38, she says: ”I know one day I’ll be considered too old. But I think 40-year-old women actually look more healthy and fit than some girls in their 20s. I’ve met women who have way better bodies in their 40s because they’ve been working on them for all these years.”
