I grew up in the very small (pop. about 6,500) town of
Selma, NC, where I lived until I left for college. I
loved high school and was crowned Miss North Johnston
my senior year. During the last year of high school, I
had major issues with food. I would go for days eating
nothing but lettuce! I always saw myself as fat, even
though I never weighed more than 120 pounds. This
continued into my college years.

After high school I attended Campbell University for a
year then transferred to East Carolina University to
study Biology. While at ECU I competed in Hawaiian
Tropic contests and this is when I hired my first
personal trainer and became serious about lifting. He
was awesome - he taught me that eating was a good
thing! I finally understood that I could look better
through eating MORE. I began eating more normally and
felt and looked better (though I still never topped
120 pounds). I had a huge setback, however, in early
2000, when I suffered bowel obstructions that required
surgery and removal of part of my small intestine.
When I was discharged from the hospital, I weighed
under 110 pounds. I was so weak and small, and it took
me forever to gain the weight back.

Just when it seemed I'd finally gotten back on track
with my training, I broke my patella, on July 4th of
2000. Talk about luck! I was in a leg brace for weeks
while it healed. In August I went back to ECU for my
Bachelor's in Nursing. During nursing school that I
decided to see how far I could take my training. My
boyfriend at the time was a personal trainer; he
helped me start adding more calories into my diet as I
started to focus on weight training. I loved the
changes I saw in my physique, and people started
telling me I should compete.

After graduation, I worked as a cardiac nurse for a
year and then switched to the ER. In 2004 I did my
first 2 shows. I qualified to compete on a National
level at the NC State show in May 2004. After that
show I took a year off to work on my physique and made
plans to hit the National stage in 2005. Late last
year I left NC to begin travel nursing and came
straight to New York City. I love it here despite the
cold, cold winters! In August I stepped onto the Team
U stage in the best physical condition of my life. It
was such an honor to be on stage with so many
beautiful women. I loved the stage and I can't wait to
get back up there again!
